are supportive of israel. i don't know what his management experience is regarding the pentagon. little, if any. so i think it's an incredibly controversial choice and it looks like the second term of barack obama will be an in-your-face term. >> so what are some of the issues? start with israel. as you heard, a number of his opponents, especially on the republican or conservative side think chuck hagel is not a friend of israel and point to his position on iran sanctions. they say because of his position that iran sanctions essentially aren't effective, that that is another point against him. also, from the liberal side, comments about a dozen, maybe 14 years ago, that chuck hagel made about a candidate for an ambassadorial position, where he called him openly and aggressively gay. now, chuck hagel has since apologized for that, but that also raises some haggles among some people on the more liberal side. not going to be a friendly reception up in the senate, however, the white house obviously thinks they can pull it off. >> an interesting confirmation hearing, that's for sure. >> let's talk a

as well or will it just stay high now for the rest of the flu season? we don't know the answer to this. also this particular strain. it's h3n2 just appears to be a more severe strain. we've seen this before. it was severe then, it's severe now. more people having significant sickness as a result. >> every year around this time you hear two things. people saying every time i get a flu shot it makes me sick so i'm not going to get a flu shot. or they say i never get a flu shot and i'm healthy and so i'm not going to bother getting a flu shot. so as a doctor, what do you tell them? >> the flu shot is not perfect. it's about 60% effective. there's another flu virus going around not included in this shot so it's much better than nothing. it takes a couple of weeks for your immunity to build up after you get the flu shot so you're not protected right away. here's an important point and i think you and i have talked about this before. when you get a flu shot, what the body is doing is sort of ramping up the immune system. so it's recognizing that virus so that if it sees the virus again, it c

think as far as what we -- the contingent we have after 2014, i would wait and i don't know of any reason why we would make that decision today. it seems that we'd want to see what the state of afghanistan is. we'd want to see what's happening in the electoral process. all of those things are obviously big factors. my sense is there's no reason to decide whether 6,000, 9,000, 15,000 troops until we get to that point. >> but, senator reed, how about by the spring. to simply training and support by the spring? last month's pentagon report said 1 of 23 afghan battalions is capable of operating on its own. >> i was down in the patyka province, and essentially 87% of the operations in the eastern part are initiated and conducted by afghan forces, so we are already seeing a transition and by next spring the afghani forces will be in the lead. that's what our military has been doing and preparing for the last several months, so i think we're making great progress. there are issues ahead in terms of the election, but ultimately this has to be an afghan-led effort. president karzai recogniz

in washington, d.c.? >> well, i don't want to get into a debate with lindsey who i happen to be a huge fan of. i think he's one of the strongest members of the senate. but the president has chosen chuck hagel or is, i guess, going to choose chuck hagel. and chuck hagel isn't going to be working for himself. he's not going to be freelancing as a senator as he was when he made these misstatements which i suspect have upset senator graham and other members of the senate who might be concerned about some of the things he said in the past. he'll be working for the president. when working for the president you follow the president's policies. i don't see this prior statement as being -- first off, they may -- they may have been wrong. he may have made some statements which were inappropriate, as he did. but everybody does, i guess. and now he's going to be working for the president. and carrying the president's policies forward. i think he'll probably carry them forward rather effectively. the thing i like about chuck, and i've known him for a long time. we had our differences when we were in the sena
